Fatboy Slim: ‘The Housemartins will only get back together if The Smiths reform’

[tweetmeme]When The Housemartins split in 1988, legend has it the band’s members vowed they’d never reunite. Nearly a quarter century later, that remains as true, according to bassist Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, who this morning told a BBC radio interviewer that it would take an equally unlikely reunion of The Smiths to spur his bandmates into action.
Cook was interviewed by BBC Radio 5′s Colin Paterson because he’s performing, as Fatboy Slim, at the Big Beach Bootique next month at Brighton’s new football stadium.
The subject then turned to band reunions:

“Couple years ago, we all met for the 25th anniversary, I believe, of London O Hull 4. We had lunch together and we renewed our vows to never get back together again. We just all looked at each other and said, ‘Do you still not want to do this?’ We’re all a lot happier being friends rather than being in a band with each other. I don’t think we really want to go back, and we don’t need the money. What I’d say is, The Smiths said they would only get back together if the queen would abdicate. So how about: The Housemartins will only get back together if The Smiths reform.”

[tweetmeme]With the My Bloody Valentine’s long-delayed reissues now out and Kevin Shields�*talking openly about a new album, it appears 2013 will see actual MBV activity: The band is scheduled to perform three concerts in Japan next February, which would mark the dormant group’s first performances since 2009.
According to Time Out Japan (via Pitchfork), My Bloody Valentine will play Osaka on Feb. 6 and then Tokyo on Feb. 7 and 8. So far, no official word from the MBV camp on these dates or additional touring plans for 2013.�*Last week, the band finally released the long-promised�*2-disc reissue of 1991 classic�*Loveless�*and its�*predecessor, 1988′s�*Isn’t Anything.

The Psychedelic Furs announce U.K. tour this summer between spring, fall U.S. runs

The new U.K. shows open June 29 in Edinburgh and run through July 6 in Nottingham, hitting cities such as London and Manchester, plus the July 1 appearance at the Hop Farm fest.
Prior to that, in late May and early June, the Furs play five shows in�*Massachusetts�*and New York. [tweetmeme]The inimitable Robyn Hitchcock this week announced he is recording a new album�*— provisionally titled File Under Pop�*— that’s being eyed for a January release, but, in the meantime, he’s giving away two “interim tracks” as free downloads, including one recorded with singer-songwriter KT Tunstall singing harmonies.
Hitchcock made the announcement via the video clip posted above, revealing he’s at work with bassist and producer Paul Noble on the project. The two new songs�*— “There Goes the Ice,” with Tunstall, and “There Goes Sam Surfer”�*— are being made available as free downloads as part of Hitchcock’s “Phantom 45s” series, as well as through Yep Roc Records’ 15th anniversary celebrations, which Hitchcock is taking part in.
Yep Roc announced Wednesday that Hitchcock will join Nick Lowe, John Doe and more at the label’s 15th anniversary concert at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, N.C., on Oct. 11-13.

‘The US Generation’ documentary to mark 30th anniversary of US Festival this Labo

[tweetmeme]Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is helping make a feature-length documentary about the so-called “Woodstock of the ’80s” —�*the 1982 US Festival, which featured Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, The B-52s, The Cars, Ramones, Gang of Four and more — to be released this Labor Day weekend on the event’s 30th anniversary.
According to a news release (via Waist High), Woz’s UNUSON Corporation is teaming with ICON Television Music and Plum Moving Media to make “The US Generation,” a 90-minute film featuring new interviews and original audio and video from the festival that’s been newly remastered. The film currently is scheduled to be released Sept. 3.
Carlos Harvey, CFO of UNUSON, says in the statement:

“This film is the only authorized and sanctioned documentary of the 1982 US Festival. It captures the cultural essence of the festival and tells the behind-the-scenes stories the fans will appreciate. I’ve had thousands of calls and e-mails from attendees over the years about when we’ll release a film about the US Festival. After 30 years it seems like the right time so the fans can relive the experience and we can create new fans, too.”

More than 375,000 people attended the first of two US Festivals on 57 acres at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernadino, Calif.,�*over Labor Day weekend in 1982, baking under the 110-degree sun to see three days of music and five tents’ worth of technology exhibits featuring the “latest in cutting-edge computers, software, video games and electronic musical devices.”
The event’s first day featured a cutting-edge music bill, with most of the aforementioned acts playing in a lineup headlined by The Police. The second and third days featured more mainstream fare, with performances by the likes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac and The Grateful Dead.
Although it doesn’t appear the film will touch on the second festival, the 1983 installment was spread over four days, drew nearly twice as many people and featured a lineup that included The Clash, David Bowie and U2, plus the event’s famous “Metal Day,” with Van Halen, Scorpions, Motley Crue and more.
Wozniak, in the news release, says: “The US Festival was not a charity event. It was a rock concert to bring music, technology and people together. It was an event to unite government, industry, science and education to improve the quality of life for everyone.”

Meat Puppets’ story to be told in authorized biography ‘Too High To Die’ by Gre

[tweetmeme]The story of the Meat Puppets will be told through new interviews with Peter Buck, J Mascis, Ian MacKaye, Flea, Henry Rollins, Lee Ranaldo, Mike Watt and more in Greg Prato’s new authorized, 407-page oral history of the legendary indie-rockers, “Too High to Die: Meet the Meat Puppets,” due out June 1.
According to a news release, Prato, a journalist and longtime fan, wrote the book with the band’s full cooperation. The book covers “the writing/recording of such classic albums as Meat Puppets II and Up on the Sun, the group’s appearance on Nirvana’s classic ‘MTV Unplugged’ episode, the story behind their breakthrough hit single ‘Backwater,’ and how the Kirkwood brothers reunited in 2006, after being apart for nearly a decade.”

Ultravox announces 13-date U.K. tour this fall in support of ‘Brilliant’ reunion

Tickets for the tour, which opens Sept. 21 in Bristol and runs through Oct. 7 in Glasgow, go on sale to the general public on Friday, but if you head over to the band’s website, there’s information about several presales, for those who’d like to get an early crack at tickets.

[tweetmeme]The Jesus and Mary Chain will join headliners Iggy and the Stooges and Elvis Costello at this September’s punk-heavy Riot Fest 2012 in Chicago, promoters announced this week, marking the latest U.S. date to be added to the slow-roll out of the Mary Chain’s still-evolving summer North American tour this summer.
As Consequence of Sound notes, the festival is set for Sept. 14-16 in Chicago’s Congress Theatre and Humboldt Park, and also features Rise Against, Descendants, The Offspring, GWAR, Built to Spill and Fishbone, among many others. Tickets already are on sale at $65 for two-day passes and $90 for three-day passes, although it’s not yet known which bands are playing which days.
The Mary Chain — who this weekend will play their first-ever concert in China�*—�*so far have announced four June concerts in California and Nevada, to be followed in August and September by a run of dates in Canada �*and in the eastern U.S.�*In March, the brothers Reid played their first concerts in four years in Texas, including a performance at�*South By Southwest.

Brendan Perry reveals title of first Dead Can Dance album in 16 years: ‘Anastasis�

As Perry writes in the discussion forum on his website, “The new album title is an ancient Greek word and its meaning is connected to the notion of rebirth.”
The album will be released on the same day that the reunited group�*— also featuring co-founder�*Lisa Gerrard�*— opens its eight-month world tour�*in Vancouver, B.C. The 16-date North American leg runs through a Sept. 7 show in Austin, Texas, then picks up in Europe on Sept. 19, in Istanbul, for 22 concerts, wrapping up Oct. 28 in Dublin.
Dates in�*South America, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia are promised “very soon.”

Originally announced as a late-spring release, the 30-track set�*— plus three digital-only bonus tracks�*— is now due out Sept. 3 on Fierce Panda, around the same time the similarly delayed “Spirit of Talk Talk” illustrated book is now expected to be published.
The tribute album features Wilder pairing up both with My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden to perform “Dum Dum Girl” and with U.K. dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson and Paul Marshall, aka Lone Wolf, to perform “Inheritance.” The set also includes contributions from Duncan Sheik (“Life’s What You Make Of It”), Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle (“Tomorrow’s Started”), Joan as Police Woman (“Myrrhman”) and The Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry (“I Believe In You”).

[tweetmeme]New Wave piano man Joe Jackson is tipping his hat to jazz legend Duke Ellington this summer with a new album called The Duke — featuring guest turns by the likes of Iggy Pop, The Roots’ ?uestlove, Steve Vai and Sharon Jones, among others�*—�*to be followed by a 14-date �*U.S. tour this fall featuring his “Bigger Band.”
The album, due June 26 on Razor & Tie, finds Jackson reinterpreting 15 Ellington standards over the course of 10 tracks, mixing “electronic and organic textures” on both instrumental and vocal tracks. Set features Jackson trading vocals with Pop on “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing)” and with Jones on “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But the Blues.”
You can check out the first track to be released off the album —�*”I’m Beginning to See the Light,” which also includes bits of “Take the A Train” and “Cotton Tail” — via the player�*below.

The Vaselines to play Seattle’s Bumbershoot — plus New York, San Francisco gigs

[tweetmeme]Reactivated Scottish indie-pop outfit The Vaselines will return to the U.S. for the first time in two years late this summer when the band — featuring founders Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee — performs club dates in New York City and San Francisco before playing a slot at Seattle’s Bumbershoot 2012.
The band announced the trio of dates on Twitter this week; they’ll play The Bell House in Brooklyn, San Francisco’s Independent and Bumbershoot in late August and early September. No word yet on whether other shows might be added. At the moment, the group’s only are scheduled dates are two U.K. festivals and a concert in Japan this summer.

[tweetmeme]You can’t accuse Sony Music of rushing out the new My Bloody Valentine�*reissues: The just-released 2-disc version of Loveless�*and its�*predecessor,�*Isn’t Anything, were set for release in 2008, and even sent to reviewers. But now that they’re finally out, the Analog Loyalist who runs the Power of Independent Trucking blog says there’s a packaging foul-up with Loveless: the two discs, featuring separate masterings of the 1991 album, are reversed.
According to his analysis of the new discs and comparisons to the leaked 2008 versions and the original Creation Records CD, the Loyalist has concluded that Disc 1, labeled as being the version remastered from the original tape (i.e., the same source as the original CD release) is actually the new version mastered by bandleader/sonic mastermind Kevin Shields from the original half-inch analog tapes, which is supposed to be on Disc 2. And vice versa.
It’s unclear, of course, whether this a problem with the full pressing, or just some of the discs. We’ve reached out to representatives from Sony Music and the band’s publicist for confirmation and, if true, whether any recall or replacement plans are on tap.

Dead Can Dance sets Aug. 9 release date for first new album in 16 years

[tweetmeme]The newly reunited�*Dead Can Dance�*will release its first new album of all-new material in 16 years on Aug. 9 to coincide with the launch of its eight-month worldwide reunion tour that same day in Vancouver, B.C., the group�*— co-founders and mainstays�*Brendan Perry�*and�*Lisa Gerrard�*— announced this week in a news release.
As previously announced, Perry and Gerrard began working on ideas for the new record last fall. They convened earlier this year in Ireland to begin recording. In the news release, Perry says, “Lisa and myself are genuinely excited to be working together again in the studio. It will be a spring album to coincide with both nature’s awakening and the group’s subsequent rebirth.”�*No other details of the album, including its title, have been released.
Dead Can Dance’s North American tour�*opens Aug. 9 in Vancouver and runs through Sept. 7 in Austin, Texas. �*The band�*�*will then open their European tour�*Sept. 19 in Istanbul and wrap up Oct. 28 in Dublin, hitting five cities in Germany as well as Russia, England and Greece, among other locales, in between. The band promises to announce additional dates in�*South America, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia “very soon.”

Redd Kross releasing ‘Researching the Blues’ — first new album in 15 years —

[tweetmeme]Redd Kross —�*the ’80s cult act founded by�*brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald�*that scored some minor college-radio hits as ’90s major-label alt-rockers�*— have signed to legendary indie imprint Merge Records and this August will deliver Researching the Blues, the band’s first new album in 15 years.
The new album, the band’s first since 1997′s Show World, arrives Aug. 7 and will features 10 songs in 32 minutes. According to Merge, the new album is the band’s favorite record, with Steve McDonald noting,�*“It has the most singular artistic vision of any record we’ve done. It’s just 10 really fucking awesome songs that have the ability to move you in many different ways.”
The McDonalds announced the reunion of Redd Kross’ Neurotica-era line-up in 2006, and the band has played sporadically ever since. The band has two current live dates on the books: a May 18 gig in Minneapolis and a May 19 festival date in Chicago that’ll feature a full performance of 1980 debut EP Red Cross and 1982 full-length�*Born Innocent.
